Police Federation Slams ‘Barbaric’ Knife Assault on PSNI Officers in Derry: Calls for Community Support and Tougher Sentencing

Derry, Northern Ireland — A violent incident involving two police officers responding to a call has drawn condemnation from the Police Federation for Northern Ireland, which labeled the attack as both “brutal” and “barbaric.” The altercation occurred early Thursday morning as officers sought to apprehend a suspect in the Collon Lane area.

During the confrontation, one officer sustained a stab wound to the leg, requiring hospital treatment and stitches. The other officer was attacked at chest height, but thankfully, his protective vest mitigated serious injury. The attack underscores the dangers police face daily while performing their duties to maintain public safety.

Deputy Chief Constable Bobby Singleton detailed the chain of events leading to the violent outburst. Police were conducting inquiries regarding a wanted individual when an officer engaged with a male at the residence. The encounter escalated rapidly, as the suspect struck the officer in the face, necessitating the use of PAVA spray to subdue him.

The situation worsened when the male produced a knife, attempting to stab an officer in the upper body. Had it not been for the protective gear, the outcome could have been catastrophic. As the first suspect was being detained, another officer inadvertently suffered a stab wound that led to a hospital visit.

Following this initial confrontation, police encountered a second male at the scene who was also wanted for breaching bail. This individual exhibited violent behavior, assaulting officers and spitting at them, further complicating the already tense situation. Police later discovered a variety of illegal drugs at the property, which are now being examined by forensic teams.

Both suspects are in custody while investigations continue, with officials emphasizing the need for rigorous inquiry into the attacks. Singleton noted that the repeated violence against officers is unacceptable, highlighting the high number of assaults that have occurred over the past year.

In light of this latest incident, Police Federation treasurer Elaine McCormill expressed her outrage, condemning the ferocity of the attack. She pointed out that the recent assault reinforces the importance of community support for law enforcement personnel, who risk their safety to protect the public.

The Federation has initiated campaigns aimed at raising awareness about the dangers police officers face daily and seeking deeper community backing. McCormill emphasized that the community’s support is crucial in mitigating such mindless violence and insists that meaningful legal consequences should be imposed on those who attack police officers.

As the wounded officers recover, the Police Federation continues to advocate for their well-being and the safety of all personnel in uniform. Their commitment to ensuring officers are supported during their recovery is coupled with a demand for a societal shift in perceptions regarding police work — a shift that acknowledges the men and women on the front lines as vital protectors of the community.
