Mesquite, Texas — A police shooting near Town East Mall left one person dead on Saturday, prompting an investigation by local authorities. The incident unfolded when Dallas police officers responded to reports of a shooting earlier that morning.
Around 10:15 a.m., officers arrived at the 9000 block of Markville Drive, where they discovered a woman who had sustained serious injuries from a gunshot. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries later in the hospital. Police reported that the shooter had fled the scene.
At approximately 11:45 a.m., while conducting surveillance on a suspect linked to the earlier homicide, Dallas police observed the individual in a vehicle in the 2600 block of Franklin Drive. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the service road of I-635, near Town East Mall.
As authorities sought to detain the suspect, the situation escalated when the suspect exited the vehicle. An armed confrontation ensued, resulting in the suspect being shot by police officers. The suspect later died from injuries sustained during the altercation. Fortunately, no officers were reported injured during the incident.
Local shoppers expressed their concerns about safety in the area. “You can’t go anywhere anymore without something happening,” said Preston Colombrito, who was at the mall to shop.
Following the incident, law enforcement closed the east service road of I-635 between Towne Centre and Town East, leading to a significant police presence in the area, which was captured by traffic cameras. The Dallas Police Department stated that both the Mesquite Police Department and the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will investigate the officer-involved shooting thoroughly.
Authorities have withheld the names of both the woman who was killed and the suspect involved in the police shooting. No additional details about the nature of the original crime or the ongoing investigation have been disclosed as the situation continues to develop.
