TAVARES, FL – The heart-wrenching death of 10-year-old Xavier Williams has left the Tavares community in shock and mourning. Residents have come together to pay tribute to the young boy, who died following severe abuse, by creating a memorial outside his home adorned with stuffed animals, candles, and balloons.
A month ago, Xavier was rushed to the hospital in cardiac arrest, his body marked by burns and bruises. After a month in critical condition, he succumbed to his injuries. His mother, Kimberly Mills, and her boyfriend, Andre Walker, are facing charges that are likely to be upgraded to murder.
The community is struggling to process the horror of the situation. Neighbors express their disbelief and sadness, grappling with the reality that such cruelty could happen in their midst. Heather Stark, a nearby resident, laid flowers at the memorial, reflecting on the devastation of a child’s life being cut short.
Xavier’s friends, including 11-year-old Bailey Smith, remember him as a kind and funny classmate. Bailey shared that Xavier was well-liked, did well in school, and enjoyed playing video games like Fortnite, leaving a lasting impression on his peers.
Despite appearances of a normal family life, investigators uncovered the horrific abuse that occurred in their home. Xavier’s younger brother revealed the terrifying details of the night Xavier was hospitalized, describing how he was restrained and subjected to violence.
In response to this tragedy, the police department has established links for donations to support Xavier’s father, who has taken custody of Xavier’s younger brother. The father traveled from Connecticut to be with his surviving son.
A candlelight vigil is scheduled for next Saturday at Wooton Park in downtown Tavares. The community is invited to wear blue in remembrance of Xavier as they gather to honor the life of a boy who was gone far too soon.
