RIVIERA BEACH, Fla. — Authorities are pursuing first-degree murder charges against a 27-year-old man who remains hospitalized following an alleged shooting that resulted in the death of his girlfriend. The incident took place on Wednesday evening in a gated community known as Thousand Oaks.
At approximately 6:25 p.m., police received reports of multiple gunshots and promptly responded to the scene. Upon arriving, officers discovered that both the suspected shooter, identified as Roberto Ernest Torres, and his girlfriend, 29-year-old Faith Nelson, had sustained gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to Saint Mary’s Medical Center’s Trauma Center for emergency treatment.
Tragically, Nelson died about two hours later from her injuries. Witnesses told authorities that the couple had been involved in a two-and-a-half-year relationship and lived together. According to a probable cause affidavit, prior to the shooting, Torres and Nelson were seen in a heated argument in their vehicle outside the community’s gatehouse.
A security guard reported that the argument escalated quickly, with Torres allegedly firing multiple shots at Nelson. Eyewitness accounts suggest that after shooting her, Torres attempted to turn the gun on himself, but an onlooker intervened.
The couple was at Thousand Oaks to meet Torres’ mother, who had been receiving concerning phone calls from him. After reaching out to Nelson to express her concerns, Torres intervened before contact could be made. When she arrived at the scene to check on them, she recounted that Torres repeatedly dismissed her worries and brazenly proclaimed that he had a firearm.
Witnesses reported that upon hearing the gunfire, Torres’ mother fled the scene. She later informed investigators that tensions had been escalating and that Nelson was preparing to end the relationship.
As the investigation continues, police confirmed that Torres is still in the Intensive Care Unit, but they believe there’s sufficient evidence to charge him with premeditated first-degree murder upon his recovery. The shocking incident highlights ongoing concerns over relationship violence and its tragic consequences.
