Political Tensions Surge in Tripura Following Brutal Assault on BJP Leader, Calls for Justice Intensify

Agartala, India — Political tensions escalated in Tripura after a violent attack on the home of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) official in the Hirachhara tea garden area, which resulted in serious injuries to a party supporter. The attack, which occurred late on August 6, has drawn strong reactions from local BJP leaders, who are demanding immediate police action against the alleged Congress-affiliated assailants.

The assault targeted Ashish Das, the BJP booth president, and left his associate Chandan Das critically wounded, losing one of his eyes during the confrontation. BJP officials, including Kailashahar Mandal President Pritam Ghosh and State Committee member Nitish Dey, have expressed outrage over the incident and have formally petitioned the District Superintendent of Police for swift justice.

According to Dey, the violence erupted around 11 PM when a group claimed to be affiliated with Congress descended on the home of Das. He described a chaotic scene where the attackers indiscriminately targeted men, women, and children present at the location. Chandan Das was reportedly shot in the eye using an airgun while police were allegedly on-site during the incident.

Following his injuries, Chandan Das was initially transported to Unakoti District Hospital before being moved to GBP Hospital in Agartala for further treatment. Given the severity of his condition, he was eventually transferred to a medical facility in Nepal, where doctors performed surgery to remove his damaged eye.

Despite submitting a complaint at Irani Police Station on August 11, BJP leaders allege that no actions were taken by law enforcement in the immediate aftermath. This prompted them to escalate their demands, seeking intervention from District Superintendent Sudhambika R. in light of the lack of progress.

Ghosh conveyed that authorities assured them of an expedited investigation, pledging that those responsible for the attack would be apprehended within a 24-hour timeframe. He underscored the local BJP’s commitment to holding the aggressors accountable and restoring order in the region.

This incident continues to fuel the already charged political atmosphere in Tripura, with party leaders on both sides trading accusations. As investigations unfold, the local community watches closely, hoping for resolution amidst the rising tensions.
