An affidavit says the 2-year-old was hurt by the same dog less than two weeks before she died.
OKLAHOMA CITY — Oklahoma City police arrested two parents on second-degree murder complaints after their daughter, 2-year-old Locklynn McGuire, was found dead late Nov. 18 from a dog mauling at a home near NE 26th Street, according to investigators.
The case has drawn scrutiny because court documents describe an earlier attack by the same family dog on Nov. 6 that sent the child to OU Children’s Hospital with a partially severed ear. The filing says the Department of Human Services opened an inquiry after being notified of the Nov. 6 incident but did not remove the child. Police and animal welfare say they were not alerted at the time. The sequence of warnings and responses is now a central thread in the criminal case and any administrative reviews that may follow.
Officers were dispatched just before 11:40 p.m. Tuesday on a welfare check. They found the child dead inside the northeast Oklahoma City house with extensive bite wounds. Police spokesman Staff Sgt. Dillon Quirk said detectives determined the girl had been left in a room with a dog for a prolonged period. An arrest affidavit states the bedroom door had a double-sided toddler lock that prevented the child from opening it. Animal control seized four dogs from the address, including the one identified in documents as a family pit bull.
Investigators wrote that the dog had been isolated with the toddler at times because it was aggressive toward the other three dogs in the home. Three of the four animals appeared malnourished when officers removed them, according to the affidavit. Authorities have not said how long the child was alone Tuesday night or who else was inside the house when officers arrived. Police say multiple people were present and cooperated with detectives at the scene.
The parents were booked into the Oklahoma County jail Friday as prosecutors weighed formal charges. On first reference, officials did not release their names pending charging, but separate records list the parents as Jordan McGuire, 34, and Darci Lambert, 24. The medical examiner will determine the final cause and manner of death. Second-degree murder in Oklahoma can apply when actions show a depraved mind in circumstances dangerous to life; prosecutors will decide whether to file that charge or others after reviewing the case file.
DHS said state law limits what it can release while a criminal investigation led by another agency is active. The police department said it could not comment beyond the affidavit and initial incident report while detectives continue interviews and evidence collection. City animal welfare officials say the dogs are being held while the case remains open. Neighbors described seeing police and animal control trucks on the block and later a small memorial with stuffed animals near the front steps.
A family fundraiser described the girl, who would have turned 3 in December, as playful and affectionate. As of the weekend, no court date had been posted publicly for a first appearance. Prosecutors could announce charges in the coming days after receiving additional reports from detectives and the medical examiner.
