Providence, R.I. — Mayor Brett Smiley confirmed that a person previously detained in connection with a recent mass shooting has been released as investigations continue. In an interview, Smiley indicated that overnight developments in the case warranted the decision to let the individual go, while affirming that law enforcement officials remain vigilant in their pursuit of the suspect.
“Evidence was reviewed, and it became clear that this person should not be held any longer,” Smiley stated. He assured the public that the investigation is far from over, emphasizing the collaboration between Providence police, state authorities, and the FBI. “Our team continues to pursue every lead, ensuring no stone goes unturned in this case,” he added.
While the recently released individual is no longer considered a person of interest, Smiley did not entirely dismiss the possibility that they may still be connected to the incident. “We are keeping all options open until we identify someone we are confident holds responsibility for this act and can pursue legal action,” he explained.
The mayor also revealed that evidence points to a lone shooter being responsible for the incident.
