Quick Action by Secret Service Thwarts Second Assassination Attempt on Trump at Florida Golf Course

West Palm Beach, FL – U.S. authorities reported that former President Donald Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt on Sunday as a gunman targeted him at his Florida golf residence. Secret Service agents at the scene swiftly identified and engaged a suspect who was armed and concealed close to the property.

The incident unfolded in the afternoon when Secret Service personnel noticed the telltale glint of a rifle barrel protruding from some brush. Officials confirmed that Trump was several hundred yards away, participating in golf activities, when the agents opened fire on the suspect.

A bystander observed the armed suspect, later identified by local media as Ryan Wesley Routh, hastily leaving the area and entering a black Nissan vehicle after responding agents fired multiple shots. An AK47-style rifle equipped with a scope, two backpacks, and a GoPro camera were retrieved near the site of the encounter.

The vehicle’s license plate was photographed by a witness, which aided law enforcement in halting the car in Martin County, north of the golf club later that day. “Martin County Sheriff’s Office was promptly alerted, they spotted the vehicle, executed a traffic stop, and detained the individual,” Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw recounted.

Following the arrest, the same witness was taken to Martin County where he positively identified the suspect, confirming the involvement of Routh in the dangerous episode.

At the time of the arrest, it was not confirmed whether Routh had discharged his weapon at Trump or the protective agents. “It’s currently unclear if shots were fired at our agents, although there was definitely an engagement between our personnel and the suspect,” detailed Rafael Barros, a representative from the Secret Service Miami Field Office.

In response to the ordeal, Trump reassured his followers through an email, declaring his safety and resilience, emphasizing his determination to not be deterred by such threats.

This incident arrives nearly two months after another alarming assassination attempt against Trump at a Pennsylvania rally where he sustained a minor injury. The Mar-a-Lago assault precipitated heightened security measures in the vicinity of Trump’s properties in Florida, reflecting the gravity of threats he continues to face.

Local reports have tentatively identified the suspect as 58-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh from Hawaii, a potential identification that awaits official confirmation from law enforcement authorities in a scheduled press briefing. Preliminary investigations into Routh’s background reveal previous convictions including for assault and possession of stolen property, among others.

Simultaneously, the White House disclosed that both President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation. President Biden expressed his relief over Trump’s safety, emphasizing the non-partisan nature of the threat. Vice-President Harris, competing tightly with Trump in the upcoming presidential election, condemned the attack and underscored the importance of maintaining a non-violent political climate.

Following the traumatic event, authorities are investigating all possible motives and associations tied to Routh, including his call for international support in conflicts abroad, which was gleaned from his social media activity.

As the investigation progresses, this serious incident starkly reminds of the persistent security threats faced by public figures, challenging law enforcement agencies to continually adapt and respond to maintain safety and uphold public confidence in their protective duties.
