GRAND BLANC, Mich. — A tranquil Sunday morning turned into chaos at a local church when a gunman opened fire during a service, resulting in five deaths and numerous injuries. Quick action by a conservation officer, who happened to be near the scene, played a crucial role in subduing the assailant.
Marc Curtis, an attorney representing law enforcement, indicated that the on-duty officer was nearby when the distress call came through. “Being in the right place at the right time enabled him to respond almost immediately,” Curtis explained. The officer arrived at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints less than a minute after the first 911 report was received.
The tragic event unfolded when Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, from Burton, Michigan, drove his truck into the church and began shooting at congregants before igniting a fire that further escalated the situation. Both the conservation officer and a Grand Blanc Township police officer reached the scene within approximately 30 seconds of the initial emergency call. Together, they were able to neutralize the shooter within eight minutes.
While Curtis described the conservation officer as a seasoned professional, he declined to disclose the officer’s identity or specific details of the incident, citing the officer’s desire for privacy. “He doesn’t want to be celebrated as a hero,” Curtis said. “He believes he was simply executing his duties, as any law enforcement officer would.”
According to Curtis, conservation officers in Michigan are fully trained law enforcement professionals, carrying weapons and equipped to handle high-stress situations. The difference lies primarily in their green uniforms and the vehicles they drive.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, the officer reportedly remains focused on the victims and their families. “He is more concerned about those affected than about what he did,” Curtis added, highlighting the officer’s dedication and commitment to public safety.
In the days following the tragedy, an outpouring of support has emerged from both congregation members and community residents, seeking to stand united against the violence that rocked their town. Local leaders have condemned the actions of the shooter, describing the rampage as a deeply unsettling act of violence.
As investigations continue and the community begins to heal, the impact of that day will be felt for a long time, reminding residents of the importance of vigilance and the bravery that can emerge in the darkest of times.
