Regional Victoria—A retiree recently experienced a terrifying encounter with a kangaroo while attempting to rescue his dog from the aggressive animal. The incident unfolded at a friend’s property, where a sudden commotion prompted Col to leap into action as his dog barked frantically.
Alarmed by the sound, Col witnessed the kangaroo advancing on his dog. In an effort to protect his pet, he grabbed a stick and attempted to fend off the marsupial. After seemingly neutralizing the immediate threat, he turned his back to help get the dog to safety. However, the kangaroo quickly charged, surprising him by leaping from the water.
In a shocking twist, Col described how the kangaroo struck him with a headbutt before gripping his head tightly. “He was growling the whole time, and I was trying to pull his hands off my head, but he was latched on,” he recounted. The unexpected assault left him struggling to regain control as the kangaroo continued its onslaught.
Fortunately, a friend intervened, using a shovel to forcibly separate Col from the aggressive animal. Although the terrifying encounter lasted only about 25 seconds, it left significant physical and emotional impacts. Col sustained injuries consistent with those from a serious car accident and spent roughly six hours in a hospital for treatment.
“I’m very, very lucky to be alive,” Col remarked, reflecting on his close call. Medical examinations revealed that the kangaroo had inflicted wounds that penetrated three inches into his abdomen, a misfortune that might have been worse had he not instinctively rolled onto his stomach during the attack. He believes his shirt prevented even deeper cuts.
Despite the severity of the situation, Col expressed a mix of relief and embarrassment. “I’m a bit embarrassed that I got flogged by a kangaroo,” he said with a hint of humor. His experience serves as a cautionary tale about the unpredictable nature of wildlife, particularly kangaroos, which can display aggressive behavior under certain circumstances.
Local pest control expert Alex Krsti weighed in on the event, noting it was unusual yet within the realm of possibility for kangaroos. “This kangaroo’s adrenaline is up, and they can be very aggressive,” Krsti explained. “Col’s lucky it didn’t disembowel him.”
This incident underscores the inherent risks of interacting with wild animals, even in seemingly routine situations. As more people venture into natural habitats, awareness and caution are critical in safeguarding both pets and people.
