RICHMOND, VA – A Richmond family is mourning the loss of a woman who was shot and killed just hours before her 34th birthday. The alleged shooter, the father of her newborn child, is now facing charges.
The incident took place on Hunt Avenue, turning a peaceful neighborhood into a crime scene. Residents, stunned by the event, described their area as typically quiet and safe.
Johnny Russell, 33, was inside her residence when she was fatally shot. The suspect, 57-year-old Michael Sprague, was apprehended the next day. He faces charges for shooting into an unoccupied dwelling and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
Community activist Charles Willis highlighted the trauma inflicted on both the family and the neighborhood, calling for solidarity and support during this difficult time.
A GoFundMe page set up by Russell’s family revealed that the shooting was an instance of domestic violence. The tragedy occurred just before her birthday, leaving behind a newborn daughter still in the NICU.
Russell’s sister is seeking emergency custody of the child. Willis’s organization, United Communities Against Crime, is providing immediate assistance to the family and encouraging the community to offer their support and prayers.
