Pasni, Pakistan — The recent discovery of multiple dead dolphins along the shores of Balochistan has raised alarming concerns among environmentalists and marine biologists about the health of the region’s aquatic ecosystem. Both spinner dolphins and humpback dolphins were found washed ashore, indicating a distressing trend linked to harmful commercial fishing practices.
Spinner dolphins, notable for their acrobatic leaps and vibrant three-toned bodies, are typically found in warm waters of the Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea. Meanwhile, humpback dolphins, once a common sight near Karachi, have dramatically declined in numbers due to increasing pollution and habitat degradation. This alarming mortality rate shows the urgent need to reassess the impact of human activity on marine life in Pakistan.
Adding to the concerns, recently discovered Indo-Pacific finless porpoises, referred to locally as ‘Tibi Dolphins’, were also found deceased in Balochistan. These unfortunate findings highlight the ongoing threats that endangered species face despite efforts aimed at conservation.
Experts have pointed to unregulated trawling and indiscriminate fishing practices as potential contributors to these incidents. Muhammad Moazzam Khan, a Technical Advisor at Whale and Dolphin Conservation Pakistan (WDC-PAK), has been vocal about the organization’s ongoing commitment to marine conservation. The group has initiated various training programs for local fishermen to promote sustainable fishing methods, but challenges persist.
Khan noted that while these initiatives have successfully protected certain species, external pressures from commercial fishing continue to put many marine mammals at risk. He emphasized the need for localized measures to halt the indiscriminate capture of fish, which threatens not just dolphins but the entire marine ecosystem.
Historically, the waters around Karachi were renowned for their rich biodiversity. Communities, such as the Kuchchi, have long recognized the significance of humpback dolphins, commonly referring to them as ‘Gada Machhli.’ However, sightings have become increasingly rare, raising further questions about the ecological health of these waters.
The situation necessitates comprehensive research to identify the root causes of dolphin mortality. Should these trends continue, experts warn that the implications could be far-reaching, potentially leading to the further decline of not just dolphin populations, but also numerous species that depend on a balanced marine environment for survival.
