Wallsend, England – Street robbers who violently attacked a man in a back alley have been sentenced to jail for stealing cash, phones, and a bag of vegetables. The incident occurred on September 24 last year when the victim was walking towards a bus stop carrying groceries in Wallsend. Russell Dixon, Christopher Bowman, and another individual approached the man, with Dixon striking him hard and causing him to fall to the ground.
After the victim attempted to flee, Bowman blocked his path while Dixon punched him once more, leaving him incapacitated on the ground. Dixon proceeded to search through the victim’s pockets, stealing £100 cash, two phones, an identity card, a card for asylum seekers, a bus ticket, and a bag of vegetables. Members of the public, including a worker from a nearby taxi company, came to the victim’s aid and assisted him.
The victim sustained injuries to his eye and was taken to the hospital, where he experienced pain, vomiting blood, bleeding in his eye, and abrasions on his hand, knee, and torso. As a result of the ordeal, he has struggled with sleeping, mental health issues, and feelings of anger towards the perpetrators.
In court, Dixon, a 31-year-old with numerous previous convictions, and Bowman, a 48-year-old from Wallsend, both pleaded guilty to robbery. The judge emphasized the unprovoked nature of the attack on a vulnerable victim, who was an asylum seeker at the time. Dixon, who had recently been released from prison for assault, admitted to a lapse back into drug use and expressed remorse for his actions.
Similarly, Bowman, who allegedly did not participate in the violence, was said to be on the phone with his girlfriend during part of the incident and was appalled when shown the footage. The victim’s family contact information was stored on one of the stolen phones, adding to his distress. Overall, the assault and robbery had a significant impact on the victim’s physical and mental well-being.
