INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – A man was fatally shot during a reported robbery attempt near Castleton on Indy’s north side Friday night. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) is investigating the incident, which took place at the Autumn Woods Apartments on the 8900 block of Autumn Woods Drive.
IMPD officers arrived at the scene at around 7:33 PM on Friday, responding to reports of a shooting during a robbery attempt. They found a man with gunshot wounds in the apartment complex’s courtyard, and he was initially reported to be in critical condition. However, he later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
According to IMPD, a man called the police to report the incident, claiming that he had been the victim of an attempted robbery that resulted in a shooting. IMPD Captain Mark McCardia acknowledged the frightening nature of the situation, stating, “Scary for the residents, obviously. Self-defense or not, either way, it’s bad. Somebody’s committing a crime of some sort and it’s scary for the residents because weapons were used.”
Following the incident, multiple individuals were detained as police continued their investigation. Eventually, one of the detained individuals was confirmed to be the suspected shooter. However, after consulting with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, IMPD released all of the detained individuals, including the alleged shooter.
The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the deceased man once his family has been notified of his death. Authorities are urging anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact detective Anthony Johnson at the IMPD Homicide Office, or to reach out to Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana with anonymous tips.
As the investigation continues, more information will be added as it becomes available.
