IGBOUKWU, ANAMBRA STATE – An unidentified member of a four-man robbery gang was fatally shot by Anambra State Police Command officers after attempting to fire a pistol at them during a checkpoint encounter in Igbo ukwu. The incident occurred on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of the remaining three gang members and the recovery of a Barreta pistol and a dagger.
According to the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the suspects had boarded a commercial bus from Nnewi and were en route to an undisclosed location when they encountered the police checkpoint. The officers halted the bus for inspection, leading to the deadly confrontation with the armed gang member.
“The gang, which boarded a commercial bus from Nnewi today, Sunday, January 14, 2024, arrived at a police checkpoint and were stopped for a search. One of the hoodlums got off, pulled a baretta pistol, and was gunned down,” stated Ikenga.
Following the incident, Commissioner of Police Aderemi Adeoye commended the police personnel for their vigilance and instructed the State Criminal Investigation Department to assume control of the case for a thorough investigation. In addition, two elderly passengers who boarded the bus at a different location were promptly released as per the commissioner’s orders.
The Anambra State Police Command assured the public that it is committed to fulfilling its duty of safeguarding the lives and property of law-abiding citizens in the state.
