Robbery Suspect Wanted for ‘Bling Bishop’ Heist Shot Dead by US Marshals During Confrontation in New Jersey

SOUTH BRUNSWICK, New Jersey – Shamar Leggette, the man wanted for the robbery of Brooklyn’s “Bling Bishop,” was fatally shot by US Marshals during an attempted arrest on Wednesday. Leggette had been in a hotel room in South Brunswick, New Jersey with his girlfriend when the officers showed up, CBS News reported.

According to officials, Leggette opened fire on the federal officers, who then returned fire and killed him. His girlfriend reportedly surrendered at the scene. In July 2022, Leggette and two others were accused of robbing more than $1m worth of jewelry from Brooklyn bishop Lamor Whitehead in the middle of a live-streamed church service.

The two alleged accomplices were arrested that September, but Leggette had evaded police ever since. He had previously been incarcerated for two armed robberies, and was listed as one of New York’s ‘Most wanted fugitives.’

Mr. Whitehead, the victim of the robbery, expressed forgiveness and condolences for Leggette’s family despite the traumatic experience. He stated that the situation was a cycle of destruction and, as an African American, he felt that it was senseless. Whitehead even offered his services, free of charge, to support Leggette’s family.

The dramatic turn of events and tragic outcome for Leggette and his family emphasizes the impact of crime on both the victims and the perpetrators’ families. The case also sheds light on the challenges law enforcement faces in apprehending dangerous fugitives and the potential dangers they may encounter during these high-stakes operations.

The death of Shamar Leggette brings an end to a high-profile case that has captivated the public’s attention and raises important questions about forgiveness, justice, and the impact of crime on communities.
