Round Rock Set to Commemorate Juneteenth Amid Texas Shooting Memories

ROUND ROCK, TX – The city of Round Rock is set to host its annual Juneteenth celebration, nearly a year after a tragic mass shooting marred last year’s event. As preparations are underway, city officials are taking a moment to remember the lives lost and ensure a secure and joyous celebration this year.

The Juneteenth celebration, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, is a significant event for the community. This year, it carries an added weight as residents reflect on the shooting that took place last year, which resulted in the deaths of two mothers, Lindsay McNair and Sarah Duke, and left several others injured.

Mayor Craig Morgan expressed the importance of moving forward while honoring those affected by last year’s tragedy. He emphasized the community’s resilience and the importance of coming together to heal. “It’s something you’ll never forget,” he said, acknowledging the heaviness of the occasion.

In response to the previous incident, Round Rock police have been actively working to ensure this year’s event is safe for all attendees. They have arrested seven individuals connected to the shooting and continue to investigate to bring all involved parties to justice.

Police Chief Allen Banks assured the public of increased security measures, promising a visible police presence throughout the event. Officers will be engaging with the crowd and monitoring the celebration to prevent any disruptions.

The celebration will pause on Saturday night to honor the victims with a video tribute, followed by two beams of light reaching skyward. This symbolic gesture serves as a reminder of the lives lost and the community’s determination not to let violence overshadow their spirit.

This year’s event will take place at Yonders Point in Old Settler’s Park, a slight change in location aimed at enhancing security and accessibility for attendees. City leaders encourage everyone to participate and enjoy the festivities, underscoring the importance of unity and community spirit.

As Round Rock gears up for the celebration, the focus remains on remembrance, healing, and the promise of a safe, joyous event that honors the significance of Juneteenth and the strength of the community.
