Umarpoti, India — A confrontation over a nominal digital transaction fee at a local shop escalated into violence, ending with a man suffering an injury that required medical attention. The incident, which has raised concerns about rising tensions over small service charges in rural communities, occurred on January 20 when two brothers entered Gajpal Kirana & Computer Work.
Girdhar Lal Sahu, 34, who operates the shop and provides Aadhaar services, reported the incident to Uthai Police. According to his account, the brothers came in to conduct a ₹200 digital transaction. Sahu, who typically charges a fee of ₹10 to cover his expenses, explained the service charge to the younger brother. This explanation reportedly led to an aggressive reaction, with the customer verbally assaulting Sahu.
Witnesses claimed the situation quickly intensified when the younger brother climbed onto the counter and struck Sahu in the back of the head with a metal bracelet, resulting in a bleeding injury. At that moment, the other brother allegedly grabbed a stone and threatened further violence outside the establishment before both fled the scene.
Sahu sought immediate treatment for his injury at Uthai Hospital. Eyewitnesses, including Channu Nishad and Shyam Ratan Gajpal, supported his version of events, indicating that the attack was unprovoked. The police have since registered a case against the assailants, looking into charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code that address assault and causing bodily harm. Initial investigations are underway as authorities work to gather statements and identify the suspects.
