SAGINAW, Mich. — Community members are mourning the loss of Jose M. “Tip” Barrera, a 41-year-old father of five, who was tragically shot inside a home on the city’s East Side. The alleged assailant, who reportedly shot Barrera during a gathering, has since been released as investigations continue.
Barrera’s family has organized a funeral service set for noon on February 6 at W.L. Case & Co. Funeral Directors in Saginaw Township. Visitors can pay their respects starting at 9 a.m. The family has requested that attendees refrain from wearing any clothing featuring Barrera’s image and ask that cell phones be silenced during the service and subsequent burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Those wishing to honor Barrera are encouraged to donate to the National Down Syndrome Society.

Initially charged with open murder, the suspect was released two days later as detectives continue their inquiry. As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with Barrera’s death.
This incident marks the beginning of a concerning trend in Saginaw, which has seen its first homicide of 2026. In another case on the same day, police responded to a report of a man injured in an unrelated incident. Armando Garcia, 49, succumbed to serious head injuries at a local hospital, prompting inquiries into the circumstances surrounding his injuries.
