San Jose Officer critically injured in downtown shootout during dramatic carjacking pursuit

San Jose, Calif. — A police officer was critically injured in downtown San Jose on Wednesday while responding to a carjacking incident involving a firearm. Authorities reported that the officer has been hospitalized but is anticipated to recover.

The violence unfolded around 2 p.m. when the suspect, identified as a Davis resident, allegedly stole a vehicle from a local dealership. Following the car theft, a law enforcement helicopter began tracking the suspect as he fled into San Benito County.

In Hollister, over 40 miles from San Jose, police engaged in a pursuit starting around 3 p.m. The suspect, driving a stolen green Corvette, abandoned the vehicle and opened fire on officers before fleeing on foot. Fortunately, no officers were reported injured during this confrontation.

After the failed escape, San Benito County deputies located the suspect, leading to another exchange of gunfire. Despite the ongoing dangers, no deputies were hurt. Demonstrating escalating violence, the suspect proceeded to steal another vehicle at gunpoint, prompting a second pursuit that extended into Santa Clara County. During this chase, he reportedly fired shots out of the vehicle.

Sgt. Jorge Garibay of the San Jose Police Department indicated that the chase concluded on Julian Street, near Terraine Street, a short distance from Highway 87. After abandoning the stolen vehicle, the suspect engaged law enforcement in another gunfight. In an attempt to commandeer yet another vehicle, he was struck by an officer’s patrol car.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, though the exact cause of death remains undetermined. Investigators will await the medical examiner’s findings to clarify whether he succumbed to gunfire or injuries from the collision.

As a result of the law enforcement activity, the California Highway Patrol closed both directions of Highway 87 at Julian Street. This incident has raised concerns about public safety and the increasing incidents of violent crime in the area.

The investigation continues, and further updates will be provided as information becomes available. Community members are urged to remain vigilant as police work to address this escalating violence in the region.
