Police said the taxi driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators.
SAN JOSE, Calif. — A 1-year-old boy died Tuesday after an airport taxi minivan struck him in the driveway of a San Jose apartment complex, police said.
The crash happened about 4:23 p.m. on Canoas Garden Avenue, west of Almaden Expressway and north of Curtner Avenue. Police said the child was walking in a parking area when the minivan hit him. He was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Authorities identified the child as Olivier Carmelo Sgarlata. The driver, an adult man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors. San Jose police spokesperson Stacie Shih said Wednesday that the early review also did not show speed as a factor.
The death marked San Jose’s 16th fatal traffic collision and seventh pedestrian death of 2026. It also was the second traffic death involving a child in the city this year. At the same point last year, San Jose had recorded nine fatal traffic crashes and none involving children.
Neighbors described a painful scene after the crash. Some said emergency crews tried to save the boy before he was taken away by ambulance. Flowers and tire marks remained near the driveway the next day as residents gathered and spoke about the loss.
“This is a tragedy no one wanted to imagine happening,” Shih said. Police said detectives are still working to determine the full circumstances of the collision. No arrest had been announced as of Friday.
The investigation remains open with the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit. Detective White is handling the case as officials review evidence and seek additional information.
