San Marcos, Calif. — A 19-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 17-year-old boy, unsuspectingly gunned down amid an evening spent with friends at a local strip mall last spring.
Adrian Francisco Ramirez was apprehended by a federal fugitive task force at the San Ysidro Port of Entry last Friday, authorities reported. He was taken into custody for the fatal shooting of Isaac Shekhayem, also a resident of San Marcos, which took place in the late hours of May 15.
The incident occurred as the victim stood with friends in a crowded parking lot of a shopping center on Los Vallecitos Boulevard. An approaching vehicle halted, followed by the assailant emerging and firing multiple shots into the group, one of which tragically struck Shekhayem in the head.
Despite prompt efforts by one of Shekhayem’s friends to rush him to Palomar Medical Center, he was declared dead shortly following their arrival, according to Lt. Michael Krugh from the sheriff’s office.
The motive behind the shooting and the events leading to the pinpointing of Ramirez as the key suspect have yet to be detailed by law enforcement officials.
During his court appearance on Tuesday, Ramirez faced charges not only for the murder but also for discharging a firearm at an occupied vehicle. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges. Should Ramirez be convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 50 years to life in prison.
