Moreau, NY – A local man has been convicted of assaulting a woman inside his residence in an incident that officials say took place in the presence of children. The Saratoga County District Attorney announced on Wednesday that Michael Pelletier, from Moreau, faces significant prison time following his conviction on charges stemming from the assault that occurred on June 24, 2023.
During the trial, evidence presented in court depicted a harrowing scene where the 32-year-old victim was subjected to both physical and sexual abuse. According to authorities, the assault resulted in numerous injuries to the woman, necessitating urgent medical attention. She was subsequently taken to Saratoga Hospital for treatment of her injuries which were described as extensive.
District Attorney Karen A. Heggen commended the jury’s decision, noting that the verdict sends a clear message about the community’s stand on sexual assault crimes. Heggen highlighted the courage of the victim in coming forward and participating in the judicial process, an ordeal that she described as immensely challenging.
Pelletier, who will be formally sentenced in December, could be imprisoned for up to 25 years. In addition to his prison sentence, he will be registered as a sexual offender, a designation that carries its own set of long-term consequences.
The investigation into Pelletier’s actions was a joint effort between the Saratoga Springs Police Department and the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office. This cooperative investigative effort was crucial in gathering the necessary evidence for prosecution and ultimately securing the conviction.
This case has reiterated the commitment of local law enforcement and the district attorney’s office to address and prosecute sexual assault cases vehemently. Heggen’s office has expressed its dedication to supporting survivors of such assaults and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable under the law.
As the community awaits Pelletier’s sentencing, the District Attorney’s Office is also focusing on outreach and education initiatives aimed at preventing similar crimes and supporting victims through the complexities of the legal process involved in such cases.
