Scarborough, England — An 18-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison for his role in a violent attempted robbery that left the victim with severe injuries. Ali Thomas King, of Scalby Gate, received his sentence during proceedings at York Crown Court on July 29.
The incident occurred on May 18 when a 19-year-old victim and a companion met with King and two accomplices in the town center. Without warning, King allegedly confronted the victim while wielding a 12-inch knife, demanding cash.
In a panic, the victim attempted to flee but was pursued by King and his associates, who quickly escalated the situation into an assault. During the struggle, the victim was stabbed in the hand as he tried to defend himself. His friend managed to escape but the attackers continued their assault, even blocking the victim’s doorway when he sought refuge at home.
The violence continued outside, culminating in King repeatedly punching the victim as he shouted for help. The victim eventually broke free, leaving a trail of blood from a significant laceration that would require reconstructive surgery after severing nerves in his hand.
Authorities apprehended King and one other suspect shortly after the incident, while a third suspect, a 17-year-old minor, was arrested later that day in a separate location. All three faced multiple charges, including wounding with intent to cause serious injury and attempted robbery.
On June 30, King pleaded guilty to the charges against him, while the other two suspects entered guilty pleas for attempted robbery but contested the more serious wounding charge. Their pleas were accepted by the court.
King’s two accomplices received varying sentences—one is awaiting sentencing, while the minor received a youth referral order, 60 hours of community service, and three months of electronic monitoring.
Detective Constable Sam Rivers, who led the investigation, described the crime as a “horrific attack in broad daylight,” emphasizing the long-term impact that such acts of violence can have on victims. He commended the bravery of the victim for coming forward and standing up to seek justice.
Rivers expressed hope that the sentences would offer some measure of closure to the victim, and reassure the community that law enforcement remains committed to addressing violent crime vigorously. The case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by knife crime, underscoring the necessity for sustained vigilance against such offenses in public spaces.
