Sea Turtle Meat Tied to Fatal Food Poisoning Outbreak in Zanzibar

ZANZIBAR, Tanzania – Tragedy struck Pemba Island in the Zanzibar archipelago as several individuals fell ill or died after consuming sea turtle meat. Authorities reported that eight children and one adult lost their lives, while 78 others were hospitalized due to chelonitoxism, a form of food poisoning. Dr. Haji Bakari, the medical officer of the Mkoani District, disclosed that the mother of one of the deceased children also passed away after consuming the turtle meat.
