SEATTLE — A man has been detained by Seattle authorities on charges linked to a hate crime following a violent attack on a transgender woman in the University District on March 27. According to court documents, the same individual, Andre Karlow, has a history of similar offenses including involvement in a domestic violence case and another hate crime incident that occurred in September 2024.
The transgender woman recounted to police that the assault occurred while she was on her way to meet her partner at a nearby light rail station after finishing work. She reported that a group of men harassed her, referring to her derogatorily and aggressively insisting she remove her makeup. When she began to use her cell phone to record their actions, the men initiated a physical attack by punching her.
The incident escalated quickly as she fell to the ground while the attackers continued with kicks and punches. Despite her attempts to escape, the assailants pursued her until she took refuge in a business along University Way NE. Employees at the business intervened, placing a chair between her and the attackers to prevent further harm. The suspects fled the scene in a dark blue Toyota Camry, which was later traced back to a previous domestic violence incident.
The victim suffered significant injuries from the assault, including a swollen eye, a chipped tooth, cerebral bleeding, and extensive bruising on various parts of her body.
The pursuit of the attackers led to a substantial police operation where Karlow was apprehended following a five-hour standoff by the Seattle Police Department’s SWAT team at an apartment on Stone Avenue North. Further investigation connected him to an additional hate crime involving another transgender woman in September 2024.
Legal proceedings against Karlow include charges of second-degree assault and hate crimes. His criminal history reveals a lengthy record, listing 13 felonies and multiple misdemeanors, encompassing assault and other serious offenses.
In a revealing statement, the victim emphasized the broader societal implications of her attack, criticizing policies and rhetoric stemming from political figures that she believes contribute to such incidents of violence against individuals like herself. She declared resilience in the face of such adversities, stressing the enduring presence and resistance of the transgender community despite ongoing attacks.
Community support for the victim is strong, with a rally planned to show solidarity and to raise awareness about violence against transgender individuals. The gathering is set to take place near the U-District light rail station.
As police continue their investigation, three other suspects in the March attack remain unidentified and at large. The case brings to light ongoing concerns about hate crimes and the vulnerabilities faced by transgender communities, sparking discussions on safety, justice, and equality.
