ALIQUIPPA, Pa. — A brutal assault at a local Veterans of Foreign Wars post has left one man severely injured and led to criminal charges against two individuals, law enforcement officials announced. The violent incident, captured on surveillance footage, occurred Sunday evening at the Aliquippa VFW Post 3577, triggering an extensive police investigation.
Authorities have charged 39-year-old Brett Ours with attempted homicide after he was allegedly seen on video attacking the victim for an extended period. The footage reportedly shows Ours hitting, strangling, and using a bar stool to beat the man, who police said appeared mostly unconscious and incapable of defending himself throughout the assault.
As the attack unfolded without any of the bar patrons calling for emergency assistance, another man, Ronald Brown, 43, entered the fray. Officials stated that Brown observed the ongoing assault upon his arrival but instead of helping the victim, he joined in, striking the already vulnerable man multiple times.
“Brown not only failed to intervene to stop the violence but compounded the felony by participating in the assault,” a police spokesperson explained. The assault continued for several minutes before Ours fled the scene.
The victim was eventually transported to a hospital with serious injuries by helicopter, according to the police. Meanwhile, the circumstances around the attack remain under scrutiny as investigators seek to understand the motive behind the violence. Although Brown claimed his actions were provoked by a derogatory comment about his daughter made by the victim, police have found no evidence to substantiate this claim and dismissed it as a justification for the assault.
Brown has since surrendered to authorities and is facing charges including aggravated assault and simple assault. Ours, however, remains at large. Police urge anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to come forward to assist in his capture.
In response to the incident, the leadership of the Aliquippa VFW Post 3577 announced an indefinite closure of the establishment. This decision reflects a commitment to reassess security measures and ensure the safety of all patrons in the future.
This incident has prompted discussions within the community about the need for increased security and responsible patron behavior at local gathering spots, particularly in settings meant to be safe havens for veterans. Community leaders and law enforcement continue to work together to address these concerns and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
