Detroit, MI — A tragic incident following a recent Detroit Lions football game at Eastern Market, a popular site for game-day festivities, has resulted in the deaths of two men. Detroit Police Chief James White confirmed a second fatality on Monday after gunfire erupted late Sunday afternoon.
The shooting occurred shortly after the Lions’ home game loss to Tampa Bay, 20-16. A disagreement among attendees at the tailgating event quickly escalated into a physical altercation and subsequently led to gunfire.
According to White, officers were swift to respond to the incident which took place around 4:30 p.m. The suspected shooter, a male from Oak Park, was apprehended at the scene where police also recovered two handguns.
“The events that unfolded here are a grim reminder of the fatal mix that can arise from combining alcohol, gatherings, and firearms,” White remarked during a press briefing.
The victims were identified only as Detroit residents, one in his forties and the other in his twenties. Both suffered gunshot wounds in what police describe as a brief dispute that dissolved only to reignite a short distance away, ending in gunfire.
As the investigation continues, officers maintained a strong presence at Eastern Market, specifically at Shed 6 where the shooting took place, indicating an ongoing thorough examination of the crime scene.
