CLEVELAND, Ohio — A wanted sex offender was arrested Friday after authorities found him hiding inside a cabinet at the same Cleveland home where a missing Tennessee woman had been found dead one week earlier, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Matthew Hensley, 43, was taken into custody without incident at a home in the 3400 block of Bosworth Road on the city’s west side. The Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s Department wanted him for failing to register his address following a conviction for unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, according to the Marshals Service.
Authorities said Hensley also faces additional charges of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor stemming from a 2022 indictment. Those charges are separate from the investigation into the death of Amber Graham, a 37-year-old mother from Spring Hill, Tennessee. Officials have not announced any charge against Hensley in connection with Graham’s death.
Members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force and the Cleveland police SWAT team entered the home early Friday. U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott said officers found Hensley concealed in an area built into a wall near a bench or cabinet.
“Today along with Cleveland Police SWAT, deputy sheriffs from Cuyahoga County and my deputy marshals, we hit that house and we found Hensley in that house hiding in a bench area and a wall and a secret compartment that he had constructed,” Elliott said.
The Marshals Service said investigators had searched for Hensley for more than two months and had received tips placing him in several parts of the Cleveland area. He was featured Thursday in a Cuyahoga County most-wanted report focused on people accused of violating sex-offender laws.
The federal agency said the arrest resulted from work by a task force that includes federal, state and local law enforcement agencies. Hensley was expected to be booked into the Cuyahoga County Jail after his arrest.
Graham’s body was discovered outside the Bosworth Road home July 3 after she had been reported missing in Tennessee. Police and fire personnel found her covered by a sheet. A Cleveland police report lists Hensley as an involved person, but that description does not establish criminal responsibility.
Graham had traveled to Cleveland with her 8-year-old daughter, according to a friend who spoke with local news organizations. The friend said Graham planned to meet a man she had communicated with through an online video game. Authorities have not publicly confirmed that Hensley was the person she intended to meet.
An 8-year-old child walked alone into a Cleveland fire station July 1 and appeared uninjured, fire officials said. The child carried a telephone number for a grandmother in Tennessee and was placed with child protective services. Graham’s friend identified the child as her daughter, though officials initially declined to publicly confirm that relationship.
Cleveland police have released few details about the circumstances surrounding Graham’s death. Investigators were awaiting findings from the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office before determining how the case would proceed. Her cause and manner of death had not been announced as of Saturday.
Hensley remained in the Cuyahoga County Jail following his arrest. The investigation into Graham’s death remains open, and authorities have not identified a suspect or announced criminal charges in that case.
