Sofia, Bulgaria — The acting Chair of the State Agency for National Security (SANS), Denyo Denev, faced mounting scrutiny on Thursday as he firmly denied any involvement of his agency in the investigation concerning multiple deaths at the Petrohan Lodge and the nearby Okolchitsa Peak. Responding to inquiries about SANS agents allegedly working with the NGO linked to the tragedy, Denev stated, “Categorically no,” emphasizing that no SANS personnel were present at the sites in question.
The controversy intensified as members of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) party called for Denev’s resignation. They accused him of disrespecting Parliament during a recent hearing, where he did not adequately address whether individuals associated with the NGO had ties to SANS. Opposition lawmakers expressed frustration, insisting that transparency is crucial in light of the grave circumstances surrounding the deaths.
Denev defended his agency’s actions, revealing that SANS had previously conducted inspections based on reports of violations associated with the NGO. He noted that evidence suggesting criminality was collected and subsequently forwarded to the prosecution service. “SANS has fulfilled its obligations in this matter,” Denev asserted, indicating that the agency acted appropriately based on prior intelligence.
Despite these claims, CC-DB leaders presented their case, asserting that information indicates at least two members of the NGO had connections with SANS. Party leader Assen Vassilev escalated the allegations, hinting at a potential cover-up and referencing the Interior Ministry’s surveillance of the group for over a year.
The investigation into the disturbing deaths, which occurred between February 2 and February 8, revealed six victims—five men and a 15-year-old boy—discovered with gunshot wounds near the lodge. Authorities are currently evaluating whether the deaths resulted from homicides or suicides, further complicating an already intricate situation.
In response to the escalating crisis, opposition members are demanding the declassification of all documents related to the incident, underscoring the need for accountability and clarity amidst the allegations. The case continues to unfold, drawing significant attention within the country as both officials and citizens seek answers in a politically charged atmosphere.
