ATLANTA, GA – A family outing on Lake Nottely turned into a harrowing ordeal after their boat exploded, leaving several members injured. On July 4, Matthew Miller was piloting the vessel with his three sons and four other family members when the incident occurred, sending them to the hospital with varying degrees of burns.
Miller described the terrifying moments leading up to the explosion. After refueling at Cozy Cove Marina, they were idling away when they noticed debris in the water. As someone reached to retrieve it, a sudden fireball engulfed the boat.
The explosion threw two of Miller’s sons, Aiden, 20, and Isaac, 17, onto the deck. Miller acted swiftly, pulling his sons from the flames and into the water. “It was a wall of flames,” Miller recalled, describing the chaos and fear that followed.
Nearby boaters quickly responded, helping the family to safety. They threw life preservers and used jet skis to ensure everyone was out of harm’s way.
Miller’s youngest, 10-year-old James, and his niece along with her friends, have since been discharged from the hospital. However, Aiden and Isaac remain in the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital, with Isaac facing a particularly long recovery due to severe burns.
Isaac’s injuries are extensive, with doctors estimating a months-long hospital stay. Despite the ordeal, Miller expressed gratitude that his family survived the disaster. “I’m blessed that everyone is still alive,” he said.
An experienced boater with two decades of practice, Miller noted there were no apparent issues with the engine before the explosion. The family now faces a challenging recovery period and has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover medical expenses.
The community is rallying around the Millers, offering support as they navigate this difficult time. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can occur, even with experienced hands at the helm.
