Vilnius, Lithuania — A severe cold snap over the weekend has claimed the lives of three individuals and left dozens vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia. Emergency medical services reported approximately thirty cases attributed to the frigid temperatures that swept across the country.
Authorities confirmed three fatalities linked to the extreme weather: one in the Telšiai District, another in Anykščiai, and the third in the capital, Vilnius. The chilling impacts have raised alarms, particularly among vulnerable populations, including the elderly and homeless.
In Telšiai, a man was found deceased at night, dressed only in a short-sleeved shirt and trousers. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. Similar tragedies unfolded in Anykščiai and Trakai District, where additional fatalities have been reported. The complete data regarding hypothermia and frostbite cases elsewhere is still being compiled.
Officials recorded five hypothermia cases in Vilnius and 16 in Kaunas, with indications that many of those affected had been under the influence of alcohol or lacked stable housing. This demographic faces heightened risks during severe cold, prompting officials to stress the urgency of protective measures.
In response to the ongoing cold wave, several schools opted for remote learning starting Monday and continuing into Tuesday. The drop in temperatures has caused significant disruption, emphasizing the need for community support and awareness.
Further complicating the situation, neighboring Latvia experienced a record low, with temperatures in Daugavpils plunging to minus 32 degrees Celsius, the coldest reported since February 2012.
Crisis management officials have urged residents to prioritize warmth and safety. They recommend avoiding prolonged outdoor exposure and ensuring vulnerable groups, particularly the elderly and those experiencing homelessness, have access to adequate shelter and clothing.
As the region grapples with these harsh conditions, the need for solidarity and support for affected individuals is becoming increasingly clear. Community resources, including shelters and warming centers, are essential to help mitigate the severe impacts of this cold wave.
