Louisville, Kentucky – Severe storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc across the South and Great Plains over Memorial Day weekend, resulting in a tragic death toll of at least 19 individuals. The storms left a trail of destruction, with hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses left without power.
Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders reported eight storm-related deaths in Arkansas, while seven were reported in Cooke County, Texas, two in Mayes County, Oklahoma, and two in Kentucky. The deadly storms brought about devastating consequences, including a respiratory patient in Arkansas who tragically perished due to a power outage stopping their oxygen concentrator.
Residents in various states, including Texas, Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, and Tennessee, faced twisters, heavy winds, and flooding as the severe weather unfolded from Saturday into Sunday. Tornado watches and warnings were issued in multiple states as the storms intensified.
By Sunday evening, over 334,000 customers were left without power in states such as Texas, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kansas. The severe weather also impacted major events, leading to delays in the running of the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 due to lightning and storm threats.
In Arkansas, the death toll continued to rise, with additional fatalities reported in Benton, Baxter, and Marion counties. Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the tragic deaths of individuals ranging from ages 2 to 72, including two children found together in a home in Cooke County.
As the severe weather system moved across the region, more injuries and damages were reported in Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Arkansas. The National Weather Service issued warnings of tornadoes and hail, with emergency response teams conducting search-and-rescue operations in heavily impacted areas.
Authorities cautioned residents to remain vigilant as the severe weather threat persisted, affecting millions of people across the Midwest and Ohio Valley. Evacuations were ordered in various locations as the storms continued to pose a risk of flash flooding and severe thunderstorms.
As the storms moved eastward, concerns grew over the potential for strong winds, large hail, and tornadoes in the affected regions.
