Sheffield, U.K. – A Sheffield man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment after being convicted of a brutal rape that occurred last year in the Woodhouse area, authorities announced. Simon Lomas, 35, of Wybourn House Road, faced charges including rape and multiple counts of assault.
On April 12 of the previous year, Lomas assaulted a woman, subjecting her to a violent attack lasting approximately 15 minutes. Despite his plea of not guilty, the jury at Sheffield Crown Court found him guilty of the charges presented, though he was acquitted of one count of assault.
In addition to his imprisonment, the court issued an indefinite restraining order to protect the victim, prohibiting any form of contact from Lomas. This measure aims to safeguard the victim’s wellbeing and prevent further trauma.
Investigating Officer Amy Todd, representing the South Yorkshire Police, expressed her satisfaction with the court’s decision. “Lomas enacted a vicious and brutal attack that caused immense suffering to his victim,” Todd stated. She highlighted the defendant’s added cruelty in forcing the victim to endure a trial, praising the jury’s decision to convict Lomas of these heinous crimes.
Officer Todd also commended the courage of the victim for coming forward and playing a crucial role in securing justice. “I hope the outcome of this case will help her find some peace and closure,” Todd added. The officer reiterated the police’s commitment to taking all reports of sexual offenses seriously, ensuring support is available for survivors who come forward.
The community is urged to report any instances of sexual assault, harassment, or abuse. The South Yorkshire Police assure confidentiality and a variety of reporting options, including online services and a dedicated hotline.
The public can also access specialized, confidential support around the clock through the Rape & Sexual Abuse Support Line. Assistance is provided to anyone needing help, and individuals are encouraged to speak out against such crimes, even if they choose not to go directly to the police. Further support is available through trusted individuals or other community resources.
This sentencing sends a clear message about the gravity with which sexual offenses are treated under U.K. law, aiming to deter potential offenders and reassure the community about the justice system’s resolve in handling such serious matters.
