A man from Virginia took the witness stand in his murder trial Thursday, detailing a chaotic scene that unfolded in his home last year, resulting in the deaths of his wife and a man he found with her. Brendan Banfield is accused of plotting with Brazilian au pair Juliana Peres Magalhaes to kill his wife, Christine Banfield, and the other man, Joe Ryan.
Banfield recounted the moment he entered an upstairs bedroom to discover his wife lying naked on the floor beside Ryan. He claimed he shouted “police” as he burst into the room, a response to hearing sounds that suggested sexual activity. During his testimony, he described a tense confrontation where Ryan allegedly brandished a knife and claimed ownership over Christine. “He said that she was his,” Banfield recalled.
As the situation escalated, Banfield stated he drew his service weapon, but he expressed hesitation about using it. “I did not want to shoot him,” he said, emphasizing his initial desire to protect his wife. Despite his reluctance, both Banfield and Peres Magalhaes fired at Ryan, leading to his death. Banfield stated he was shocked when he saw Peres Magalhaes armed with a gun that she had retrieved from their residence.
The trial follows a series of shocking revelations, including Banfield’s admission of infidelity with Peres Magalhaes in the months leading up to the incident. Under cross-examination, he acknowledged the depth of their relationship, claiming he fell in love with her after they began their affair in August 2022, shortly after hiring her to care for their daughter.
Banfield faces four counts of aggravated murder and additional charges related to the use of a firearm during the crimes, which occurred on February 24, 2023. He has pleaded not guilty and could potentially face life in prison if convicted.
Investigators noted that Christine Banfield suffered multiple stab wounds to her neck, leading to questions about the circumstances of her death. Peres Magalhaes testified last week that the two had planned to create a situation where Ryan would appear to be attacking Christine, allowing them to portray the incident as self-defense.
Banfield denied knowledge of a predetermined plan, labeling the prosecution’s theory absurd. “It’s absolutely crazy,” he said in response to suggestions that he conspired with Peres Magalhaes to murder his wife.
Eight months post-incident, authorities arrested Peres Magalhaes on second-degree murder charges. In 2024, she pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. Meanwhile, Banfield was indicted for the deaths nearly a year after she was charged.
The tense trial continues to draw attention to the complex dynamics at play in the couple’s relationship, compounded by infidelity and a web of deceit involving multiple individuals. As the court proceedings progress, the dramatic unraveling of events on that fateful February morning remains a focal point, revealing the dark turns in a domestic situation that spiraled tragically out of control.
