Minneapolis, Minnesota – Tragedy struck outside an apartment complex in south Minneapolis when a police officer and two civilians lost their lives in a mass shooting. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, also left four additional individuals injured. The shooter has been identified as Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office. However, the official confirmation from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is still pending.
Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, 35, had a prior first-degree burglary conviction in 2007 that prohibited him from legally carrying a handgun. Additionally, he had an active warrant related to a 2022 incident where he was spotted by police with a revolver at the scene of a robbery in downtown Minneapolis. Mohamed attempted to hide the gun and discarded a pistol holster during a pursuit before his arrest.
The incident unfolded as police responded to reports of gunfire at the apartment complex. Officer Jamal Mitchell sustained fatal injuries during the encounter, allegedly while attempting to assist Mohamed. The assailant, Mohamed, continued firing even after Mitchell had fallen. Ultimately, Mohamed was shot and killed by law enforcement at the scene. The medical examiner’s report indicated that Mohamed succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
In addition to the casualties, Osman Jimale, 32, was also found deceased inside the residence. Several individuals, including a firefighter, another police officer, a bystander in a vehicle, and a resident within the building, sustained injuries as well. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is leading the investigation into the incident, with multiple sources pointing to Mohamed as the perpetrator, although formal confirmation is awaited.
The community rallied to support Officer Mitchell and his family, with a memorial erected at Minneapolis’s 5th Precinct and a fundraising BBQ organized to aid the family financially. Celebrities and local residents alike attended the event, emphasizing the importance of standing together in times of tragedy. Donations are being collected through various law enforcement organizations to assist Mitchell’s family during this difficult period.
