Shooter Killed at Texas Megachurch, Leaving Child Critically Injured

Houston, Texas – A female shooter was fatally shot by two off-duty law enforcement officers after she opened fire at a megachurch, critically injuring a five-year-old boy and wounding another man, who is in stable condition.

According to Troy Finner, Houston’s police chief, the incident took place on Sunday at the Lakewood Church, led by prominent evangelical Christian pastor Joel Osteen. Finner confirmed that the child is in critical condition, while the 57-year-old man shot in the hip is stable.

The woman, described as being in her early 30s and wearing a long trench coat, entered the church with a long rifle and a backpack, accompanied by a boy, and began shooting, Finner said. Two off-duty law enforcement officers who were present at the church at the time of the incident opened fire and killed the woman.

Law enforcement officials are investigating the potential threat of explosives, as the woman threatened that she had a bomb and sprayed an unknown substance upon first responders’ arrival.

During a press conference, Osteen said he would pray for both the victims and the shooter, expressing gratitude that the shooting occurred between services when fewer people were in the building.

Houston Mayor John Whitmire lamented that the violence took place as people were preparing to practice their faith and others were looking forward to the Super Bowl encounter between the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.

In a statement, Governor Greg Abbott expressed support for the impacted community and offered resources to help bring swift justice to the perpetrator of the crime.

Authorities believe the shooting was an isolated incident and have reassured the public that there is no further danger. The identity of the woman has not been revealed, and the investigation is ongoing.
