KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI – A shooting occurred near the end of a rally in Kansas City for the Chiefs, leaving at least one person dead and more than 20 people with gunshot wounds. Chief Stacey Graves of the Kansas City Police Department confirmed that firearms were recovered, but did not disclose the number or caliber of the weapons.
In response to the incident, the NFL expressed deep sadness and extended thoughts to the victims and everyone affected. The Chiefs organization also expressed profound sadness and confirmed the safety of all players, coaches, and staff members and their families who were present at the parade and rally.
Witnesses described the chaotic scene as alarming, with a legally blind parade-goer being pulled to safety by a stranger after gunshots were heard. The shooting left nine children being treated in the hospital, with a total of 12 patients from the rally being treated at Children’s Mercy Hospital.
Police confirmed that three individuals are in custody, including one who may have been tackled by bystanders. Chief Graves emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been announced, while also expressing anger at the tragic events that took place.
Fire Chief Ross Grundyson revealed that eight of the victims had immediate life-threatening injuries, while Mayor Quinton Lucas commended the swift and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency personnel. Lucas also acknowledged the bravery and dedication of first responders, who administered aid to the injured without concern for their own safety.
The tragic incident occurred despite the presence of over 600 Kansas City, Missouri police officers and 250 officers from outside agencies. At the time of the shooting, some reporters from a local NBC affiliate described taking cover behind their desk when they heard the gunfire.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are urging anyone with information or video footage of the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
The senseless act of violence has cast a pall over what was meant to be a joyous celebration for the Chiefs and the city of Kansas City, leaving the community in shock and disbelief.
