Shooting Victim Files Lawsuit Against Homeowner in Fatal Incident

Hebron, Washington County, New York – A civil lawsuit filed in Washington County Supreme Court on Wednesday, March 20, details the emotional distress and psychological harm suffered by Blake Walsh after the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis. The incident occurred when Walsh, in one of three vehicles that mistakenly turned onto Kevin Monahan’s rural property in Hebron, was looking for a friend’s house late Saturday, April 15, 2023.

Upon realizing their mistake, the group turned to leave when Monahan fired two shots from a 12-gauge shotgun, hitting Gillis in the neck while she was in the front passenger seat. Walsh had to drive nearly five miles to get cell reception to call 911, but unfortunately, Gillis succumbed to her injuries. A jury in February 2024 found Monahan guilty of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, and reckless endangerment, resulting in a 25-year to life sentence in prison.

Walsh’s lawsuit alleges that Monahan acted carelessly, negligently, and recklessly when opening fire on the vehicles and also implicates Monahan’s wife, Jinx, for keeping unsecured firearms in the house. The lawsuit points out that Mrs. Monahan was aware of her husband’s tendencies to become agitated and violent, particularly towards unwanted intruders on their property. Despite this knowledge, she allegedly kept several firearms, including a 20-gauge shotgun, easily accessible to Monahan.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified compensatory and punitive damages from the defendants. Notably, Gillis’ father, Andrew Gillis, has also filed a separate wrongful death lawsuit against Monahan, seeking a minimum of $5 million in damages. Both cases shed light on the tragic consequences of an altercation that resulted in the loss of a young life and the legal repercussions faced by those involved.

The court proceedings and legal actions taken exemplify the devastating impact of reckless actions and the importance of responsible firearm ownership. The lawsuits aim to hold accountable those deemed responsible for the tragic outcome and seek justice for the victim and her family. As the legal battle unfolds, the community awaits further developments in the quest for closure and accountability in the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident.
