Shooting Victim in Critical Condition After Targeted Attack in Co Down

Banbridge, Northern Ireland – A man in his forties, identified as Brian McCourt, is currently fighting for his life after being shot in the abdomen in a violent attack on the Rathfriland Road in Banbridge. The incident, which took place on Friday around 8pm, has left the victim in critical but stable condition.

Authorities have arrested a 46-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder and conspiracy to murder in connection with the shooting. The suspect remains in custody as the investigation continues. It has been revealed that McCourt was previously the target of a violent attack last year, leading to the injury of a woman and the disturbance of two pensioners near the town of Banbridge.

Following the shooting, local representatives have expressed their shock and condemnation of the incident. Alliance MLA Eóin Tennyson described the attack as “sickening,” expressing hope for the victim’s full recovery. He emphasized that such violence has no place in their community and urged anyone with information to come forward to assist the authorities in their investigation.

Sinn Féin councillor Kevin Savage echoed the sentiment, urging those responsible for the attack to cease their actions. He called on the public to cooperate with the police and provide any information that may help in bringing the perpetrators to justice. DUP MP Carla Lockhart emphasized the importance of allowing the police to conduct a thorough investigation without speculation, while UUP leader Doug Beattie condemned the shooting as “appalling.”

The extensive police presence at the scene, along with forensic teams and K-9 units, indicates the seriousness of the ongoing investigation. The closure of roads in the area, including the Drone Hill Road and Rathfriland Road, further highlights the impact of the incident on the local community. As the investigation progresses, authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in ensuring justice is served for the victim and their family.
