MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY – The new Netflix film “Society of the Snow” depicts the harrowing true story of the 1972 Andes plane crash. The movie has received high praise from both critics and viewers for its portrayal of the survivors’ ordeal.
Of the 45 passengers on board the ill-fated flight, only 16 made it off the mountain following the crash. The others either perished in the initial impact, succumbed to their injuries, or were killed in an avalanche that struck the fuselage where the survivors sought shelter.
After realizing that search efforts had been called off, the group made the courageous decision to send out a team in search of help. Eventually, a team was able to make it back to civilization and lead rescuers to the stranded survivors.
Carlos Páez RodrÃguez, one of the survivors, reflected on the life-changing experience, describing it as “the most incredible survival story of all time.” He went on to build a life for himself, marrying and having children, and working in the field of advertising. Tragically, some survivors, such as José Luis ‘Coche’ Inciarte, have passed away in recent years.
