Johannesburg, South Africa — The Hindu Dharma Association of SA (Hindasa) Seva Foundation has voiced its deep concerns over the repercussions of a recent terrorist attack in Kashmir, highlighting the potential adverse effects on regional tourism and safety perceptions. The attack, which resulted in the death of at least 26 individuals and left scores wounded, occurred in Baisaran, a scenic locale of Jammu and Kashmir, known for its popularity among tourists.
Pradeep Ramlall, Secretary of Hindasa, stated that the South African government has denounced this brutal assault on civilians. He emphasized the warm bilateral relationships between South Africa and India, which are underpinned by robust tourism exchanges. According to Ramlall, such acts of terrorism instill doubt among potential tourists, which could substantially dampen tourism, a critical economic pillar for the Kashmir region.
Kashmir has witnessed an uptick in tourist activity since the revocation of Article 370, which granted the region special status, assigning it the new status of a union territory. “The community’s mainstay is tourism, so this attack is not just a human tragedy but also an economic challenge,” Ramlall added, noting the likely economic repercussions on the local populace.
Ramlall further commented on the geopolitical tensions in the region, suggesting that militants operating from Pakistan were likely behind the attack, aiming to undermine Kashmir’s economy and its success story as a burgeoning tourist destination.
He also remarked on the broader geopolitical dynamics, considering India’s ascending trajectory on the global stage vis-à-vis Pakistan’s increasing isolation. “India has become a formidable global power, participating actively in international coalitions like the G20, BRICS, and the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue. Meanwhile, Pakistan faces accusations of harboring terrorist activities, placing it at a disadvantage on the world stage,” Ramlall highlighted.
In a heartfelt letter to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ramlall expressed a robust condemnation of the violence on behalf of South Africa’s Girmitya community – descendants of indentured laborers from India. Pledging solidarity, the letter underscored the shock and sorrow that reverberated across continents due to the heinous attack, emphasizing the common resolve against terrorism.
The letter read, “We stand in unwavering solidarity with the government and people of India during this time of grief, ensuring our support for all measures designed to uphold peace, justice, and security in the region.”
Ramlall reasserted that terrorism poses a severe threat to worldwide collective security and humanity itself. The commitment to collaborate with India and other global actors in fostering values of peace, tolerance, and mutual respect was overtly reconfirmed.
