Abuja, Nigeria — A coalition representing youth leaders in southeastern Nigeria has strongly denounced a violent attack on Jude Ezenwafor, the governorship candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State. Ezenwafor was ambushed by armed assailants on Friday night, sustaining injuries alongside two others in his vehicle.
In a press release, the Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) highlighted the seriousness of the incident and called for the immediate apprehension and prosecution of those responsible. “This attack is a blatant assault on not only an individual but on the democratic values that bind our society,” said Mr. Goodluck Ibem, the group’s President General.
The shocking event took place in Wuse 2, while Ezenwafor was returning home from an engagement. The coalition expressed alarm over the growing trend of violence and intimidation in Nigeria’s political landscape, which they believe undermines the nation’s democracy.
“Candidates across the political spectrum need to be secure as they campaign,” the group stated. They urged authorities to implement effective protective measures and to enhance law enforcement’s ability to combat rising political violence. “Those who resort to violent means to disrupt our democratic processes must be held accountable,” they emphasized.
COSEYL also offered heartfelt sympathies to Ezenwafor, who is currently hospitalized and receiving medical care for his injuries. “His dedication to the people of Anambra, especially the youth, must be recognized and safeguarded,” the coalition added.
In their statement, they insisted on prompt action from law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident thoroughly. They reiterated the necessity for swift justice against the perpetrators, framing it as a critical step to restore faith in the political system ahead of the 2025 Anambra gubernatorial elections.
As the region anticipates increased political activities, the coalition’s statement serves as a rallying cry for vigilance and community engagement. They urged all citizens and supporters to report any suspicious behavior to maintain safety during this challenging time for democracy in the country.
