South Wales Police Launch Investigation Into Shocking Attacks on Swans Amid Rising Violence

Neath, Wales — Authorities have initiated an investigation into a disturbing series of attacks on swans in south Wales, which have resulted in multiple swan fatalities. Over the past three to four years, South Wales Police have received reports of violent incidents along the Neath canal, spanning areas from Briton Ferry to Neath. While the police have yet to identify any suspects, they indicated that there is no evidence suggesting a single individual is responsible for all the incidents.

Volunteers from Swan Rescue South Wales expressed their heartbreak over the alarming trend. Evidence collected from the scenes has revealed shocking acts of cruelty, including one swan apparently shot in the head and another believed to have been bludgeoned with a brick. The group reports having responded to at least five confirmed swan deaths in the area, taking emergency calls from as far as Somerset and Conwy County.

One grim case involved a young cygnet that suffered a broken back from having a brick dropped on it, ultimately leading to its drowning. Another female swan was found shot with an air rifle, with seven of her eggs stolen just weeks before they were set to hatch. “It’s been devastating to see such violence against these beautiful creatures,” said Vanessa Price, a volunteer with the group. “We’re facing not only swan attacks but also the deaths of ducks and moorhens, as well as numerous pigeon shootings.”

Responding to the escalating crisis, Swan Rescue South Wales aims to rescue and rehabilitate as many injured birds as possible but admits their resources are limited. “We cannot be everywhere at all times, and while police patrols have increased, they are preoccupied with numerous other cases,” Price further explained. The volunteer group has received about 190 calls this year alone, with around 10 percent directly related to violent acts against swans.

As the investigation continues, South Wales Police have emphasized the legal ramifications of injuring or killing swans. “We want to remind the public that harming these birds is an offense, and we are committed to holding those responsible accountable,” a police spokesperson stated.

The incidents have sparked public outrage, with community members calling for greater awareness and protection for local wildlife. Awareness campaigns and community outreach are essential to safeguard not just swans but all forms of wildlife that might be at risk in the region. As volunteers work tirelessly to care for the injured animals, the support of the community could be pivotal in bringing the perpetrators to justice and preventing further violence against these vulnerable creatures.
