MADRID, Spain – A 23-year-old Spanish student who was brutally attacked while walking home in Cork, Ireland, has returned to Spain and shared the harrowing impact of the crime. The victim’s impact statement was read by Judge Mary Dorgan at Cork District Court as a 44-year-old woman pleaded guilty to her involvement in the robbery.
The Spanish student, who has since returned to his family home in Spain, described the lasting psychological effects of the attack, expressing an increased sense of insecurity and fear since the incident. He also revealed that he now seeks the help of a psychologist to cope with the trauma and struggles to understand why he was targeted.
The student was attacked by three men and a woman while walking home from a friend’s house in the early hours of the morning. He was punched and kicked, resulting in injuries to his neck, face, and a black eye. The assailants also went through his backpack, with the woman involved admitting to searching for alcohol.
One of the attackers, Linda Gilhooley, aged 44, of Ballyphehane, Cork, has pleaded guilty to robbery in connection to the incident. Her sentencing has been adjourned until March 7, pending a report from Arbour House.
