EDINA, Minn. — A 23-year-old man has been sentenced to 33½ years in prison for the fatal shooting of a St. Paul resident following a birthday celebration late last year. The sentence delivered on Friday marked a significant departure from standard guidelines due to the brutal nature of the crime.
Kayvon Julian-Breaun Madison, a Bloomington resident, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the December 2023 death of Darien Jamal Roberson, who was 21 years old. Hennepin County District Judge Juan Hoyos emphasized that the circumstances surrounding the shooting warranted a longer sentence, indicating that the act was “more onerous” than typical cases of its kind.
Madison will receive credit for the 531 days he has already spent in custody. His plea agreement did not include any negotiations between the defense and the prosecution regarding sentencing, which means he faced the judge without a recommendation from either side.
The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on December 2, 2023, in the parking lot of a strip mall located near the Galleria shopping mall. Madison, along with others, called 911 to report the shooting, during which he claimed that Roberson “came at” him. Eyewitness testimony, however, refutes Madison’s account, indicating that the interaction between the two men was preceded by a verbal altercation.
Witnesses revealed that Roberson and Madison were familiar with one another but had not maintained a close relationship. Their last significant contact appeared to stem from a disagreement in 2021 linked to a mutual friend’s overdose. According to the criminal complaint, Madison made a provocative remark regarding Roberson’s friend, which escalated tensions and led to the confrontation.
Surveillance footage from the scene did not support Madison’s assertion about Roberson’s actions during the encounter, raising questions about his claim of self-defense. Madison reportedly escalated an argument into violence when he pulled a firearm and shot Roberson five times.
The shooting underscores the broader concerns of gun violence in urban areas and the tragic consequences that can arise from conflicts. Community leaders continue to advocate for measures aimed at reducing such incidents and enhancing safety in places where young people gather.
As the case concludes with Madison’s sentencing, it serves as a reminder of the devastating impact of violent crime on families and communities alike, further fueling calls for thoughtful discussions on gun control and conflict resolution strategies.
