TAICHUNG, Taiwan – An alarming incident unfolded on May 21 when a stabbing took place on a Taichung Mass Rapid Transit (TMRT) train in Taiwan. The attack left four individuals injured around 11:20 AM, as captured on camera by witnesses showing a man armed with a knife in a white shirt and brown jacket.
Bystanders courageously intervened, attempting to subdue the attacker despite sustaining injuries themselves. One witness recounted the harrowing experience, stating, “A group of passengers rushed in to press him down, especially holding down his arms and hands which were still holding a fruit knife.”
Videos captured the intense moment as passengers worked together to restrain the suspect, with one individual successfully disarming him. The assailant, a 20-year-old male with a history of mental health issues, had traveled from Kaohsiung and was quickly apprehended by the Taichung City Police Department Commissioner, Lee Wen Chang.
All injured passengers have been transferred to a nearby hospital, with the train involved in the incident sealed off at Taichung City Hall Station. This random act of violence coincided with a similar attack that occurred ten years prior in the Taipei metro, emphasizing the need for improved safety measures on public transportation systems.
Taiwan, known for its ranking as the 33rd most peaceful state or territory in the 2023 Global Peace Index out of 163 total places worldwide, has been shaken by these incidents. Despite rare occurrences of violent acts in the country, authorities continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of their citizens.
