HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — Authorities in Texas have charged a man with capital murder following the fatal shooting of a local deputy in what is described as an ambush. Ronald “Ronnie” Palmer Jr., the suspect in question, is also facing charges of aggravated assault related to a separate incident at a Little Caesars pizza restaurant.
The tragedy occurred shortly after 10 p.m. on Wednesday. According to Chief Deputy Mike Lee, the events leading to the deputy’s death began with the assault at the restaurant. Reportedly upset over a wrong pizza order, Palmer allegedly assaulted the establishment’s employee, used a firearm to hit the employee, and then fled the scene.
A swift response by law enforcement followed the restaurant employee’s quick action in identifying the getaway car’s details. Deputy Fernando Esqueda, 28, who had been with the department for five years, located the vehicle. While confirming the car’s sighting over the phone with another detective, Esqueda was suddenly ambushed and fired upon multiple times.
The wounded deputy was quickly transported to a local hospital in a patrol car but succumbed to his injuries there. Esqueda was an integral part of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, dedicated to serving on the Violent Person Task Force.
