VANCOUVER, Canada — A 62-year-old man, previously identified as a high-risk sex offender, has been arrested in connection with a disturbing series of crimes that includes the sexual assault of a minor and a bank robbery.
The incidents began shortly after 5 p.m. on May 28, when a woman in her late fifties was approached by a stranger inside an office building near Oakridge Centre. As she was leaving a medical appointment on Cambie Street, the man grabbed her, prompting a desperate scream that allowed her to escape without serious harm.
Just minutes later, the same suspect allegedly turned his attention to a 14-year-old girl who was using the public restroom in the same building. Armed with a knife, he reportedly sexually assaulted and forcibly confined the teen. In a fortunate turn of events, another individual attempted to enter the restroom, which provided the young girl with a chance to flee the scene.
Police responded swiftly to multiple 911 calls reporting the assault. As officers were en route, the suspect committed a robbery at a nearby bank within the very same building. Authorities apprehended the suspect, identified as John Frederick Field, at approximately 5:40 p.m.
Field has been charged with several serious offenses, including sexual assault with a weapon against a minor, forcible confinement, carrying a concealed weapon, robbery, and assault. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
This alarming series of events comes in the wake of Field’s history of offenses. In August 2022, he was placed on Canada’s most-wanted list after leaving a halfway house mere hours after being released. Prior to that, he had served time for offenses including sexual assault, break and enter, robbery, and theft.
