New York City, New York – Two suspects have been identified in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller during a traffic stop in Queens. The suspected shooter, Guy Rivera, 34, has a history of at least four prior arrests, while the driver of the vehicle, Lindy Jones, 41, has been arrested at least 12 times, with his latest arrest in April 2023 for a loaded firearm.
During a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams highlighted Rivera’s criminal history, expressing concern over the recurrence of such individuals on the streets. The tragic incident occurred during a routine traffic stop on Monday evening, where Diller was shot in the torso just below his bullet-resistant vest. Despite being rushed to Jamaica Hospital, Diller succumbed to his injuries.
The NYPD officers were conducting the stop as part of the Critical Response Team when they encountered the two suspects in a vehicle parked illegally at a bus stop on Mott Avenue. The situation escalated when the passenger in the vehicle refused to comply with the officers’ instructions and brandished a gun, leading to the fatal shooting of Diller.
Rivera, the suspected gunman, was shot by Diller’s partner and is expected to survive. Rivera was released from prison in 2021 after serving time for criminal possession of a controlled substance, with his parole ending just last year. Diller’s tragic death marks the first on-duty fatality of an NYPD officer since the 2022 shootings of Officers Wilbert Mora and Jason Rivera.
Diller, who had been with the NYPD for three years, leaves behind a wife and young child. The community mourns the loss of a dedicated officer, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding his death. As the city grapples with the repercussions of this senseless act of violence, the impact of such incidents on law enforcement and public safety remains a topic of discussion and reflection.
